Mariya Porten

Mariya grew up on SJI, and earned her BA in Political Science at Colorado College. On the first day of college, when she was asked to share one word to describe herself, Mariya’s word was “movement”, and she didn’t have to think twice about it. After graduating, Mariya began working for an outdoor trekking company in Lake Tahoe and in 2011 she was invited to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro as a staff member. She completed a year-long comprehensive course at South Lake Tahoe Community College designed to educate future fitness professionals. There she interned at the front desk of the college gym and enjoyed paddle boarding, snowboarding, and hiking to the top of countless Sierra peaks. In 2014 Mariya completed her Personal Trainer certification through the American College of Sports Medicine. The next year, Mariya began her Basi Mat Pilates certification in Oakland, California, and began teaching group fitness classes at Fit Culture, a small award-winning gym in Nevada City, CA. When she became pregnant with her first child in 2016, Mariya moved back to WA to be closer to family, landing on Orcas Island, where she taught group fitness for Seniors at Orcas Athletics in Eastsound until she was 7 months pregnant. Currently, Mariya is finishing her Mat Pilates internship at The Studio and will be testing to complete her Basi Mat Program in April. She believes that exercise can be a form of self-expression as much as a discipline and that everyone has an inner athlete, they just have to find their movement. Mariya is grateful to be learning from the highly experienced teachers who staff The Studio and is honored and excited to have joined their team.
